The First Session
The first session is typically an assessment session, which means that we will spend the time talking about why you have come along and what you would like help with. I might also ask questions about your current circumstances, such as work, living arrangements, and friends so that I can get to know you better. Different questionnaires may be used to supplement the information I gather. Sometimes it can feel like a lot of questions are being asked in this session, however, once I understand more about you and what you would like from therapy, we can work together to agree on a plan for therapy, including the frequency and number of therapy sessions needed.
When working with children and families, I may spend the first part of the session with everyone in the room before using the opportunity to meet with each person individually. Sometimes both parents come with the child, and other times just one parent depending on other commitments such as work.
As we progress through therapy, I will regularly check in so that we can review our progress to ensure our sessions together are working effectively toward your goals. In order to make the most out of our time together you will be supported to actively apply the various skills and strategies learnt in the session to your daily life.
